In the Event of an Emergency
We recently flew from Des Moines to Orlando for a much-needed, long-postponed trip.
I’ve flown enough in my life and can recite the safety instructions from memory. This time, however, I had my two teenage sons with me. I think it may be their first flight where they felt independent, mature, older. I noticed how carefully they were paying attention, so I did as well.
“In case of an emergency, an oxygen mask will fall from the ceiling. If you’re traveling with small children, put yours on first and then your child’s.”
That comment always struck me as odd. Wouldn’t you want to help your children first? As a father, I know that I’ve set personal things aside to support them. Wouldn’t it be important to help those around us first, especially if it’s your child?
When I first made that connection, it felt selfish. Then I had a “think again” moment and had an epiphany: if you’re busy helping someone else and pass out, then there are now two people that need help. In other words, take care of yourself first so you can take care of those around you.
As I watched my boys nod their heads, I was reminded of that concept. In the improv world, we say “take care of yourself so you can take care of your scene partner.” That concept applies to everything: your career, your family, your friends, even flying!
My advice to you, today, is take care of yourself. Whatever that means, take care of yourself first. Here are some ways I take care of myself:
Daily meditations
Walks
Perform and coach improv
