Stepping Out to Make Magic

I had the pleasure to provide a lunch-n-learn workshop earlier this summer. A full day of training and development can be draining. My client informed me the topic of the day was a little on the dry side and they wanted something to spark the teams and re-energize for the afternoon.

Usually, I work with groups of 10 – 25; this group was over 70 in one large conference room! For our activities, I choose ones that would encourage group participation and were easy to explain to a large group. In addition, as the activities were happening, I walked around the room offer guidance, listen to dialogue, and enjoy the laughter! I’m often met with resistance when I say “we’ll be doing some improv activities,” yet, without fail, everyone joins in and learns something while in a state of play!

Afterward, the teams were asked “What elements of the program today did you like the best?” Here’s a sample of the feedback I received:

Improv workshops and coaching challenge us to be our best selves.

Make the choice to start fresh today.

  • The energizer was a lot of fun. It is good for us all to laugh together.

  • The guest speaker was so good!  He really drove home the need for play/humor but also importance of connecting to your work family.

  • I enjoyed the interactive afternoon activities.

  • Ice breaker, it was fun and great to have for after lunch.

  • Energizer…purpose of game and how to use with employees.

I often get the “deer in headlights” look when I start a workshop and let them know we’ll be doing some improv activities. The activities all have a purpose and real-world application.

It takes courage to step outside the comfort zone. Yet, when we do, magic can happen.
