How Are You Brave?

A recent trip to Disney World offered a number of insights. As we’re walking into the park, I have a talk with my boys. “My challenge for us today is to ride as much as we can. Even if it looks scary, lean into that, and let’s do it!”

130 feet drop of full terror? …no thanks.

My youngest, knowing I was hesitant already, asked “Even the Tower of Terror?!”

I gulped and decided I needed to stand by my words.

As the day progresses, he keeps bringing it up. “Dad, are you still in?”

“Can we get a Lightening Pass?” (We couldn’t, we missed our chance.)

“How soon until we get to Tower of Terror?”

We’d been challenged by our oldest son, and now my youngest was holding us to it!

If you’re not familiar with the Tower of Terror, let me spoil it for you: you walk up to the top of Mt. Everest, strap yourself onto a small platform, and then the ride operator starts telling you a story before they drop you straight down for what feels like eternity. This is called “fun.”

We finally (eventually?!) made our way to line. The pit in my stomach grows as I feel my anxiety building up. I really don’t care for falling or that feeling of falling. Yet, here we are, waiting in line to purposely fall 130 feet to certain death. At least, that’s what my brain is saying.

Here’s the moment of truth. We didn’t go on it. The line was over two hours! We wouldn’t even get on the ride until 10:30 pm. That’s all I said. Roughly 5 minutes later, the boys realized how long we were asking the rest of our party to wait. It was brave for my boys to say “maybe we should try again next time.”

My point though is this – I challenged my sons to face their fears. To be brave. To push through, hold each other accountable, and support each other when everything around me was saying “are you crazy?!”

Sometimes, being brave is facing the fear head-on. Sometimes, being brave is supporting each other. Sometimes, being brave is stepping up to say, “we’ll conquer this fear another time.”
