How Did I Get Here?

I was working the somewhat traditional 9 - 5 job. Except, at times, it as 9 - 6. Or 6:30. Or 8. …or 3 am. I’ll admit, when I was younger, that appealed to me. Yet, not so much anymore.

At the same time, I was recently married. One of my wife’s friends asked me to coach her Group Improvisation teams for the annual speech contest hosted by the Iowa High School Speech Association. I found I could have an incredibly challenging day, then go work for a few hours with those students, and BAM! the issues of the day would disappear!

So, I thought to myself, I should go be a teacher. So, I did.

We used to gather at a bar and grill on the last day of school. 5 years ago, a colleague asked me “Joe, if you weren’t teaching, what would you do?”

“I would perform and teach improvisation.” I had actually been saying that for five years prior to that when my wife and I were first dating.

So, after ten years of teaching, I felt it was time to grab the dream and make it happen.

Greatness is out there. Time to get it!
